I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours…

There are many kinds of resolutions people make at the beginning of a new year, it’s like a new beginning of sorts. There are very personal resolutions that you might want to keep private, but there are fitness and lifestyle resolutions that you might want to share with others. They (not sure who “they” are but…) say if you tell other people about your resolution’s that you might feel more pressure to stick to them. Especially very viisble resolutions like losing weight, exercising more, eating better, drinking less, quitting smoking. So, did you make a resolution this year? I always make small resolutions that tweak my lifestyle choices and help my fitness. This year I made resolutions to:

1. Drink more water, I have actually ridden 50 miles (20-25 mph avg.) on 1 bottle of water…NOT good!                   Kids, don’t try this at home. That’s why they call me “One Bottle Donna”. I vow to do better!

2. Do less cardio. I know, right? Who needs to do less cardio? I do! I teach 5 Spinning classes a week and ride my road bike 50-75 miles a week. That’s too much cardio! There, I said it. I never thought I would hear myself say those words. There is such a thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing. If i want to build more muscle then I have to cut back on my cardio, lift heavier weights (this is my #4 resolution), and eat more lean protein. It’s that simple.

3. Lift heavier weights so I can build more muscle. Instead of 3 sets of 15 repetitions I will do 3 sets of 8-10 reps. If the 10th rep doesn’t feel really heavy then i need to go a little heavier. You should do the same, depending on your goals. 12-15 reps are good for toning a women’s body but 8-10 reps. will build you some nice little muscles, if you are consistant and you watch your diet and cardio. Remember, the last couple of reps have to be challenging or go a bit heavier.

4. Eat more lean protein to help me build the muscle I’m trying to add to my body. By lean protein I mean I will be eating 4oz. of grilled chicken, 4oz of grilled salmon or 4oz. of my husband’s gigantic NY strip steaks, we go to a lot of steakhouses. My husband loves his meat and potatoes! I eat ton of veggies with my protein, I even grow my own in my garden. I cooked the last of my Bok Choy last night. Yummy!

5. Stretch, Stretch, Stretch. I can’t stress this enough! I have always skimped on stretching but now i feel i really need it…i’m not getting any younger. So i put together a 15 minute stretching routine (mostly for my legs and hips, my upper body gets stretched almost daily) and I’m going to try and get it done at least 4-5 days a week, if not more. I spend all day in my studio so when I’m waiting for a client I just plop down on the floor and away i go. I have to admit, it feels great!

So you now see that even us Trainers and Spinning Instructors have to shake up our lifestyle choices and fitness routines periodically. As one of my clients said the other day, “Just like real people.”  Changing things up helps keep my life interesting and it helps me learn and grow as a person and as a Trainer.

If you haven’t made a resolution yet, here are some healthy ideas:

1. Plant a garden. Getting your hands dirty is fun!

2. Start exercsing, just grab your sneakers and get outside and walk! Better yet, take your dog with you.

3. Quit drinking soda and quit eating fast food!

4. Do something that scares you. I know, that sounds scary doesn’t it? I was just in Sedona, AZ. and I went on a mountain bike ride. It’s pretty hilly and rocky there. I’m used to my skinny road bike tires and a smooth road. This was stepping outside of my comfort zone. At first, i was a bit nervous. When I was done I loved it! (except for the very large bruise on my butt) I’m so glad I didn’t whimp out. SO don’t be a whimp this year!

5. Learn a new language, try a new recipe, travel to a new place, try a fruit or a veggie that you have never had…

The list of things you can do in this new year to get a little healthier is long, just do something!

Feel free to leave a comment about your resolution or if you have a question I can help.

Happy New Year!

Wishing you the HAPPIEST of New Years!

As you can tell from our lack of posting for the past few weeks that we both have been very busy with the holidays and all that it entails, traveling, family, shopping, eating, traveling some more, eating some more….you know the drill. My sis and I got to spend a quiet New Years Eve together this year in Scottsdale, her and her hubby were out from Miami celebrating their 28th wedding Anniversary. This is how we chose to spend it, sitting at the fire talking and sipping wine and sometimes just sitting in silence – it was bittersweet since she was leaving to fly back to Miami early the next morning. I am always grateful and treasure the quiet times we get to spend together since they are so few and far between. We also talked about where we should go this year for our annual “Twin Twip” aka “Sister Trip”…..all sorts of ideas were thrown around…….stay tuned!

HNY from the Twins

In closing, here is a link to a very timely blog post that I love called; “11 Resolutions For a Better You—Proven by Science” from a blog that I read often called, Becoming Minimalist, it’s all about simplifying and living a better life  – a goal that I have had for many years…..with simplicity comes clarity about who we are and what we want. I have been making an effort to get rid of things and simplify my life for the last few years, it’s not as easy as you think, it takes work. My plan for this year is to find a smaller place to live than my 2/2 (with breakfast room, carport and garage) patio home in Scottsdale that I am currently renting, I love it but I have as an artist I really have to bust a move to cover my nut each month. I want to live smaller to not only bring my overhead down but so I can work less and enjoy life more……yes, that sounds perfect to me!

Wishing you all of the best in the New Year…Health, Happiness, Simplicity and Peace!

A Merry Christmas wish from us!

Happy Holidays from the Twins!

Since both of us are in Miami for Christmas this year we thought we would use one of our favorite fishing photos from several years ago as our “Holiday Blog Card”. Even the Bluefin Tuna that we caught that day (and had for dinner) got in on the action with his own Xmas ornament. I am happy to be home this year and with my family for the holidays since it can be a very busy time with my art shows and work in Arizona. You just have to make the time for what is important and family is important to me. We wish you the best for the holiday season and for the coming new year……Ho-Ho-Ho from the Twins!

Twishing Xmas

BTW, when Twins go fishing it’s called Twishing!  Happy Holidays!!!

Christmas with Grandmother…..

Ah yes, what would Christmas be without uncovering a priceless photo of us with our dear Grandmother? I wish we had more photos of us with our Grandparents – I think about ALL of them on so many occasions, especially around the holidays. Grandparents are amazing things, they are full of wisdom and I don’t think we truly appreciate that until we are adults. I think back to many things they told me as I was growing up and. of course, they didn’t make sense then but do now. Same with my parents……who knew that they knew what they were talking about, I sure didn’t. The wisdom of years, it’s a good thing ……..don’t take it for granted kids!

Gmother - twins Xmas

Enjoy the special times with your family this holiday season – I will be going home to Miami next week to be with mine. Stay tuned for LOTS of “Twinsanity” from me and my sis…we have BIG plans for lots of F-U-N!!!!

My life as an Artist…….

Ah yes, the life of a photographer…I chose the artists life way back in 1989 when I left my home in Miami and headed West. While it’s not an easy life nor for the faint of heart, nothing can be more satisfying (or frustrating) than making a living from what you love to do. You just have to be ok with walking a tightrope with no safety net. For years I shot daring adventure sports photos for the editorial world – that all came to a screeching halt after 9-11 and a serious bout with burnout. After a much needed “break” from the photo biz I returned “refreshed and recharged” in 2008, this time to the world of Fine Art Photography and I even tried my hand at the Gallery world for a few years. I loved owning my own gallery space here in Scottsdale but it kept this free-spirited artist too tied down. In order to create my photographs and run my Photo Workshops I need to be able to come and go as I please without the time commitment that the gallery required. I now have the perfect balance; in the summer when temps soar past liveable levels here in Scottsdale I head to New Mexico and S Utah to lead my Photo Workshops – yes, it is hot in those places too but nothing like the sizzle here in the Valley of the Sun. Then in November when temps come back down to less than “sizzling” in Arizona and our 7 months of perfect winter weather arrive, I do a bi-weekly Artisan Market about 2 miles from my home in Scottsdale as well as some other juried art shows and festivals in the area.

Step into my office....

Step into my office….

This past weekend was Small Business Saturday at the Artisan Market and the market was abuzz with shoppers as well as the local TV news crews and I am happy to say that they enjoyed my booth. I even got a cameo appearance on a few of the Phoenix news stations that night. It’s always fun to get good press!!!

Hey, that's me peddling my wares!

Hey, that’s me peddling my wares!

I got interviewed as well for about 10 minutes by one of the reporters but I guess they thought I made better cameos than interviews – I ended up on the cutting room floor….sigh! Damn, I thought I really nailed it! :( Oh well at least me and my photos made the news…….work it girl! (and I did!)

Yea that's me showing off one of my new Mini Metal photographs.

Yea that’s me showing off one of my new Mini Metal photographs.

To see the entire story that was on the local news click HERE – prepare to be dazzled by all of us artists. If you are going to be in Scottsdale over the winter season please be sure to stop by one of my art shows – click HERE to see my current schedule. I’d say a star was born that day…not me but my ART!!!! YAY!

Oh did I mention that Fine Art Photographs and Photo Workshops make VERY thoughtful and meaningful holiday gifts for not only the art enthusiast in your life but the photo enthusiast…….just sayin! Happy Holidays! :)

Twintertime play!

So what do you call it when Twins go snowmobiling?? You got it…Twinmobiling!!!! I lived in Park City, Utah for 12 years and always loved when my twin sis would come out and visit. Being from Miami I loved showing her ALL of the fun wintertime aka Twintertime, things we would do and snowmobiling was just one of them.

Twinmobiling…whheeee!!!

Another fun thing we would do in the winter is chase Moose through the woods and wrestle them to the ground and pop their antlers off!!! OMG! Kidding!!!!!!!!!!!! No hate mail from PETA please!!! Each year Moose shed their antlers and sometimes out on a hike you would get lucky and find one before they got chewed up by other animals. This one was a gem! Nice rack huh?? Haha! :)

Nice Rack!!!!

Nice Rack!!!!

I now live Arizona and don’t have to shovel snow anymore. I loved Park City on those sparkly bluebird days with fresh fluffy snow but winter was a bit long for this Miami native. Summer time is now mountain time for me and winter time is desert time….works for me!

I hope you are staying warm and toasty wherever your winter location is. What is your favorite winter activity??? Tell us all about it!

Good Bye Thanksgiving, Hello Santa!

You have a Turkey hangover, right?  You were in the kitchen all day and your feet are killing you, your back hurts and you feel like a stuffed turkey. Am I right? I have to admit that I don’t feel any of those physical symptoms of the Turkey hangover. We went out to a restaurant for our Thanksgiving feast since my two oldest children stayed in Brooklyn, it’s hard for them to get away since they are working people now.  So me, my husband, my youngest son, and my mother went to a restaurant on South Beach, it was nice but I would rather have my whole family together. Next year we will all be together in Brooklyn, you can count on that!  Thanks to Face Time (Face Time needs a “smell option”) my Brooklyn kids and I kept in touch all day yesterday. I even saw the whole Thanksgiving Feast that my daughter and son had prepared. They are amazing, I don’t know how they learned to cook a Thanksgiving feast so proficiently. They certainly didn’t learn from me.

My turkey DID NOT look like this!

My first turkey DID NOT look like this!

My first attempt at preparing a Thanksgiving feast was in 1980, I was 20 years old and I had NO clue what to do with a turkey. I was a waitress at the time and the restaurant I worked at gave all of its employees a medium-sized turkey.  I thought that was great, now what do I do with this bird? Remember, this was before I could Google, “How to cook a turkey?”, I guess I could have called the “Butterball Hotline”. I thought I had it all under control, I unwrapped the bird, put in a pan and slapped it into the oven. Easy Peasy, right?  Everything was humming along fine, my turkey was starting to smell yummy. As I prepared my green beans (that’s the only veggie I knew how to cook) the kitchen began to fill with smoke. I opened the oven door and the smoke was coming out of the cavity of the bird. I grabbed my oven mitts and pulled the pan out of the oven. After the smoke cleared I looked inside the bird and what to my surprise…there was “Junk in her trunk”! How was I supposed to know there was a bag of “goodies” inside that bird? My feast was an epic fail!

I hope your Thanksgiving feast was fabulous and you were surrounded by the ones you love.

Now, bring on Santa!

PS. All of my children and my twin sis will be here for Christmas and my children will show me how to cook a proper feast.

Look who's here...

Homemade Cranberry Saucy Goodness

Nothing says “Thanksgiving” like a big bowl of cranberry sauce. Growing up I hated the stuff and now I love it! Forget that stuff in a can loaded with yucky high fructose corn syrup and tons of sugar – my healthy homemade version will change your life. Really! And easy? OMG….so easy!! I am all about short easy recipes with just a few ingredients anything longer and I just lose interest. Yea I know…A.D.D.

Fresh crans

All you need are 3 or 4 items for this tart & tasty treat!!! I thought I would get a jump on making it tonight and bake a piece of chicken for dinner then slather it in cranberry goodness. Slap this festive side dish on your table tomorrow and your peeps will think Martha Stewart was in your kitchen and cooked your Thanksgiving feast! Tell your guests to prepare to be DAZZLED by your gourmet cooking expertise! Here is the quick and easy recipe – you’re welcome!

Crans cooking

Cheyenne’s Cranberry – Apple Sauce

1 12 oz bag of fresh cranberries

1 small sliced Gala apple (optional)

1 cup spring water

Pure Maple syrup to taste

2 teaspoons granulated Xylitol (optional natural sugar substitute)

  • Rinse cranberries thoroughly in small colander
  • In medium saucepan bring water to boil
  • Add cranberries, apples and maple syrup
  • Return to boil and cook, stirring occasionally
  • Cook until skins start to POP (it’s quite festive – it’s like a party in a pot!)
  • For a smooth sauce cook until most of the skins POP
  • Lower heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes
  • Sauce should start to thicken as it simmers on low
  • Carefully taste for sweetness and add optional Xylitol (you can get it at any health food store)
  • Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature then refrigerate until chilled. (I prefer mine at room temp or slightly warm)
  • Makes about 3 cups of yumminess!

The hard part now is not eating all of it from the pot before it makes it to the table. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and enjoy time with your friends and family…..that is what it’s all about anyway! Let me know how your sauce turned out!

“Ho Ho Ho…OMG my pants don’t fit!”

“Step away from those tiny little hot dogs wrapped in bacon, now!”, “Put down that sweet, sugary drink, now!”, “A minute on those holiday lips, a lifetime on those post-holiday hips!”…Don’t tell me you have never said these things to yourself. We all have. This is the time of year when food is everywhere! Lots and lots of food. Candy, cakes, cookies, chocolates, holiday drinks, holiday parties. Is seems from Halloween to New Year’s Day food is in major, yummy abundance, and if you’re not careful, your butt could be in major abundance by 2014. I know that’s not nice, but it’s true.

Step away from that snowman!!!

Step away from that snowman!!!

The Holiday “eating” season is hard for all of my clients and for that fact, me too. I love to eat and I love to eat tasty unhealthy things sometimes. During the year I really try to keep my diet as clean as possible but then again there aren’t adorable, yummy snowman cookies lying around my house to eat. During the Holidays you need to remember the most important thing is to enjoy yourself and your family, not how tight your pants are. My best advice, don’t wear your expandable waistline pants (AKA  yoga pants) all winter cause when you put your cute “Skinny” jeans on in the spring…they are not going to fit. No, they didn’t shrink, you grew! I’m not saying to skip all of the yummy goodies, but a little here and a little there, moderation is the key.

Have fun and enjoy your family.

Have fun and enjoy your family.

Spend time enjoying and laughing with the ones you love, and be silly too! When you go to parties spend time socializing and mingling. Don’t spend your whole time grazing on the buffet. Keep your “Adult Beverage” consumption to a dull roar…if you can’t then drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and a monster headache. Warning, don’t go to your bevy of holidays parties starving, this will just set you up for a “Pig Out” disaster. You will regret it in the morning…I promise. You will definitely need to workout extra hard to burn off all of those empty calories! Which brings me to my final point…DON’T SKIP YOUR WORKOUTS!

silly girls!

Silly Twins!

If you want to avoid that pesky holiday muffin top, then you must workout as much as possible. Keep up with your cardio and weight training schedule, maybe add a Holiday Spinning Class to your schedule. If you have to wake up a little earlier to get it done, then that’s what you have to do…Plain and simple. No mercy, right? I say, “If you want a shoulder to cry on pull over to the side of the road.” This is fitness tough love people! I always add as many 90 minute Spinning classes as possible to my Studio schedule during the Holidays. We even Spin to Christmas music, how corny is that? Check with your gym, they might add more fun cardio options to their schedule too.

NO EXCUSES!

Workoing out during the holidays is a must!

Working out during the holidays is a must!

In closing, my twin sis and I would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy your family. Stay tuned for my best advice on how NOT to cook a turkey. Memories of my first attempt at cooking that giant bird.
